GEW 2014 Somaliland Press Communique

On November 23rd, a conference to commemorate the Somali chapter of the Global Entrepreneurship Week was held at Maansoor Hotel in Hargeysa, Somaliland with a wide range of participants in attendance.


With a particularly strong focus on inspiring and empowering youth entrepreneurship, the conference’s key objective was raising the awareness of local businesses, civil society, policymakers and the international community on the socioeconomic and structural challenges faced generally by entrepreneurs in Somaliland, but especially the youth.

As part of an ongoing partnership to provide opportunity to young people in the Somali territories, Shaqodoon, Silatech and the American Refugee Committee (ARC) have launched the Somali Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Program (SYEEP), an effort to bridge the gap between job seekers and the local business community. The primary component of the SYEEP program is the establishment of specially-designed “One Stop Shop” (OSS) centers for youth employment and business support services. Shaqodoon Organizes Regional Employment Conference

SHAQODOON Organization with support from Save the Children International (SCI), held two inclusive youth employment conferences in Borama (AWDAL) at Rays Hotel, and Barwaqo Hotel, Berbera, Sahel region. The main objective of the conferences was to bring together leading academicians, policy makers, business leaders and development planners in Somaliland to advocate promoting job opportunities for youth and advance necessary policies for future planning to promote  youth employment and participation in the economic development of the country....

Registration of 6,000+ out of work and hard to reach youth begins

Registration of hard to reach youth in selected districts in Somaliland has begins on 31st December 2013. The aim of the registration is to register 6,000 out of work and hard to reach youth to connect them information on election process through their mobile phones. Once complete the total registered youth under this project will total 17,000 youth. These youth will be registered from Baligubadle, Galbiley, Odwayne and Caynaba towns within Somaliland with special attention given to registration of females and those that have low literacy rates, from minority groups and those that are excluded from community activities...

These activities, from large-scale competitions and events to cherish networking - gatherings, connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors; introducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.

The initiative launched in 2008 and has since grown to 125 countries—with 24,008 partner organizations planning 33,846 activities that directly engage millions of participants every year...


Shaqodoon Organizes First Somaliland Job Fair

Shaqodoon Organization and steering committee consisting of Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Labor, Sony and ILO held the first national employment conference and job fair on 1-2 July 2013. Shaqodoon organized the Job Fair and ensured employers and jobseekers had met and networked under the same roof. The Job Fair brought together different sectors of the Somali business community, local and international NGO showcasing and posting paid jobs, internships and trainings opportunities.

The job fair was well attended by youth and employers. The President of Somaliland H.E Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo attended the Job Fair and Conference.

The president was given lengthy tour on selection of employers and organizations exhibiting job and trainings training opportunities. The president spoke to hundreds of youth that attended the job fair.....

Using Mobile Technology To Support Democracy Building

Shaqodoon Organization has held a workshop on 21th May to present the feedbacks data analysis they received from both domestic  observers and public people from across the country on the Election Day and also indicate how  mobile phone technology was useful in assisting and facilitating SONSAF for the November 2012 local government elections to get quicker response from field observers. Moreover, the workshop was participated by the Key election Stakeholders like  Mr.Abdurrahman Mohamed Ismail a member of NEC National Election Commission, Mrs. Suad Abdi “Country Representative of Progressio”, Mohamed Saed from Sonsaf, Mr. Abdijalil Dahir from IRI and also civil society organizations  took part the event  such as Nagaad ,Sonyo, ANDP...

 About Shaqodoon Organization

Shaqodoon, Somali word for ' Job-Seeker' is an off-shoot of the 'highly rated' former EDC  'Somali Youth Livelihood Program' funded by USAID that provided Somali youth with greater opportunities to skill trainings, access to work,  internship and self-employment opportunities. Shaqodoon organization is registered in Somaliland, Puntland, Galmudug and South Central zone, having offices in Hargeisa and Mogadishu.


The NGO continues skill trainings programs, prepare and link ‘Shaqodoon’ with the local business community, other potential employers and over and above encourage the youth to inculcate an entrepreneurial culture. In addition, Shaqodoon will continue working in education and conflict resolutions using a variety of effective methodologies embedded with Shaqodoon InfoMatch system...
